The League of Professional Theatre Women is pleased to give out numerous awards annually to women in the professional theatre.

The Josephine Abady Award

To honor the memory of member Josephine Abady, The League of Professional Theatre Women presents an annual award to an emerging director and/or producer, inclusive of all women of color, or the creative director and/or producer of a work of cultural diversity who has worked professionally in the theater for a period of at least five years. The applicant may have worked under AEA jurisdiction, regional, off-Broadway, Broadway and LORT theatres.

The Lee Reynolds Award

Lee Reynolds served on the League of Professional Theatre Women’s board of directors. She was an award-winning producer and a mentor to and developer of writing talent. The award is given annually to a woman or women active in any aspect of theatre whose work for, in, about, or through the medium of theatre has helped to illuminate the possibilities for social, cultural, or political change.

Given on occasion.

The Lucille Lortel Awards

In April 1999, the League received a bequest from the Lucille Lortel Estate requesting that a fund be established and maintained by the League to support The Lucille Lortel Grant with a monetary award given annually to an aspiring woman in any discipline of theatre who is showing creative promise and deserves recognition and encouragement. In 2008 an additional award of $1,000 was awarded as the Lucille Lortel Women's Visionary Award.

The Ruth Morley Design Award

Initiated in 1998 in honor of costume designer Ruth Morley, one of our profession's leading designers in theatre and in film, this award is given at the final League luncheon in June. Ruth served on the League's Board of Directors. Her costumes for Annie Hall, Inherit the Wind and Deathtrap are memorable.
