The School of Theatre & Music (STM) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) welcomes applications from candidates with significant professional theatre experience and strong teaching skills for a full-time theatre faculty position beginning August 2017.
The faculty member will play a key role in implementing a newly revised “Authorship” track within a growing theatre program. Responsibilities include teaching core courses such as directing and/or playwriting, devising, adaptation, script analysis, etc.; working with the Head of Theatre to revise/implement curriculum; directing, writing and/or adapting for the mainstage season; and maintaining a career as a professional in the field. In addition, the faculty will attend staff, faculty and production meetings, and rehearsals as needed; and perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Theatre. All faculty collaborate to advance the School’s mission to develop practical knowledge, cultural sensitivity, intellectual resourcefulness, and imagination in emerging artists and scholars. Likewise, all faculty are expected to serve on committees, and to participate in student advising and recruitment.
Minimum qualifications include a terminal degree (MFA) in theatre or equivalent professional experience; a record of excellence in college-level undergraduate teaching of theatre courses; and an ongoing and recognized professional career in theatre. Desirable qualifications include demonstrated administrative ability, and/or experience building professional or academic programs; commitment to interdisciplinary work within the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts; and appreciation for the place of BFA and BA programs within a public university setting with faculty and students from diverse backgrounds.
Faculty appointment will be at the level of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (full-time tenured or tenure-track) or Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor (non-tenure track). Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
UIC enrolls over 29,000 students on a 240-acre site one mile west of Chicago’s Loop. The School of Theatre & Music provides innovative, rigorous, and comprehensive academic and performance programs as part of its diverse, urban context. STM is one of four units in the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts. The theatre program includes approximately 130 majors in BFA and BA programs in Acting, Theatre and Performance, and Theatre Design, Production and Technology.
