May 20th, The Legacy Project & On Her Shoulders launches their year-long staged reading series, featuring plays by women written over ten centuries. LPTW is sponsoring Special Talk-Backs in the Series.

The Play:
“A MANS WORLD”
By Rachel Crothers
Directed by Melissa Crespo

Set in early 20th century Greenwich Village, in a tenement populated by Bohemian artists and immigrants, the play features Frank, a worldly but idealistic woman writer who is determined to bring attention to the plight of women, especially the poor. What happens when she must choose between her principles and her heart? The play considers the gendered double-standard and the meaning of family– by birth or by choice. Over a century after the play premiered, it remains funny and moving, and, above all, it still speaks to us.

Date & Time: May 20th at 6pm

Location: New School for Drama, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd Floor

ORAL HISTORY: ACTRESS PATTI LUPONE TO BE INTERVIEWED BY BROADWAY.COM’S KATHY HENDERSON

Monday, June 3 at 6PM

At the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Bruno Walter Auditorium at 65th and Amsterdam Avenue

FREE!

Patti LuPone
When Patti LuPone starts to sing her voice rings out to the rafters. Only 5’2, when you see her in action you’d swear she was 6 feet tall. In 1972, Patti became one of the original members of The Acting Company, formed by John Houseman, performing in many of their productions and in 1973 made her Broadway debut as Irina in Ibsen’s Three Sisters.

She has been nominated for Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League and Olivier Awards for her outstanding performances in innumerable roles and in 1985 she received London’s Olivier Award for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s world premiere of Les Miserable and The Cradle Will Rock.

Although she has appeared in many musicals, since 1977 Patti has acted in several plays by David Mamet prompting the New York Times reviewer to write of her performance in The Old Neighborhood: “Those who know Ms LuPone only as a musical comedy star will be stunned by the naturalistic fire she delivers here.” Starring in the original Broadway production of Evita as Eva Peron in 1979, Patti was hailed by the critics and won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She sang out as nightclub singer Reno Sweeney in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes at Lincoln Center Theater in1987 and in1993 returned to London to create the role of Norma Desmond in the original production of Sunset Boulevard. After acting in numerous other productions, in 2005 she returned to Broadway to star in a revival of Sweeney Todd in which she sang and played the tuba and the orchestra bells. And in 2008 she won her second Tony Award for her outstanding performance as Mama Rose in Gypsy. Patti has performed in numerous New York concert productions of musicals including Pal Joey, Annie Get Your Gun, Sweeney Todd in both New York and San Francisco, Anything Goes, Can-Can, Candide, Passion and Gypsy for City Center Encores!. Her performances in Sweeney Todd, and Candide were recorded and broadcast for PBSs Great Performances and were released on DVD. The concert staging of Passion was televised as part of Live from Lincoln Center.

Patti performs regularly in her solo show and has numerous film and televison credits.

She and cameraman Matthew Johnston, to whom she has been married since 1988, have one chid, Joshua Luke, and live in Connecticut and South Carolina.
